Mesons are a beam weapon specialized in penetrating shields and armor.

Description

Mesons are a type of beam weapon. They only deal one damage over their entire range, but compensate by bypassing enemy shields and (depending on your Meson Armour Retardation technology) armor. They have a maximum range of

 Base Range * Range Modifier * 10000km

Their rate of fire is

 Base Range / Capacitor Recharge Rate * 1s

While the theoretical maximum range far exceeds 1.5m km, no Beam Fire Control is able to handle ranges beyond this limit. Higher ranges offer no advantage for meson cannons.

Mesons can be mounted in turrets.

Damage Profile

Mesons ignore shields. When a meson hits armor, it has a chance to completely ignore each layer of armor, dependent on technology. If a layer of armor does stop the meson, it scores 1 point of damage on the armor. If the meson hits a damaged armor location, it only has to penetrate the remaining armor in that location.
