An engine is an absolute necessity for any ship that wishes to travel faster than 1km/s. Engines are researched through the Power and Propulsion tech tree amd can be deisgned with a number of parameters. You may place more than one engine on a ship, generally increasing the ships speed.

Engines can either be Military or Commercial: Military engines are smaller and more compact than their commerical counterparts, but also require maintenance.

Engines create a thermal signature, one that can be detected by Thermal Sensors, so having high-powered or many engines on a spy ship is not advisable. By dropping your ships speed, or by designing engines with Thermal Reduction, yo can reduce the size of your ships thermal signature.

An engines thrust is measured in Power Output: the higher the Output, the faster the engine can go.
