With the discovery of the ruins of the United States of Cordoba's colony in the Alpha Centauri system, and the desire to exploit the ruins and colonize the moon, the decision was made to construct jump gates between Sol and Alpha Centauri rather than design jump-capable freighters and colony ships. The Constructor class is the result of that decision.
