The aging Cossack line represents mankind's first armed spacecraft. The Cossack-II remains largely outdated, displaced by its missile peers and outclassed by its larger cruiser cousins. The Cossack family holds the dubious honour of being the first to encounter the nefarious alien species commonly known as the Star Swarm. Currently mostly relegated to system defense, its six surviving vessels remain the only shield-less warships in service in the Terran Navy. There are rumours of a successor being in the works, pending some breakthroughs in the energy weapons field.

As the Terran Navy's first missile-armed warship, the Mirai presented a different approach towards space battles, one that made it impervious to the less-advanced Kalugan vessels and provided a safe way to counter their incursions into the Oasis system. The Mirai later saw action during the Kaluga Campaign (2079-2080), playing an important role in the destruction of the Kalugan Navy.
However, the Mu Cassiopeiae incident signalled the twilight of this first iteration of the Mirai line. The remarkable Lanze anti-ship missiles, while tremendously effective against the backward Kalugans, proved to be obsolete in the face of Precursor ordnance. This is why this class is now being refitted into a new, more advanced design.

The Mirai-II represents the latest in missile and propulsion technology. It is an upgrade in every area possible while still holding to its predecessor's principles. The centrepiece of these upgrades is the Claymore anti-ship missile, a vast improvement over the venerable Lanze which boasts over twice the speed and thrice the effective range, besides a 60% stronger, three-stage thermonuclear warhead.
