I want Sharks with Frikken' Lasers Attached to their heads!

The Research Project screen is where you design the non core components, I.e. where you can specify the size, shape, colour(?) and frequency of that inter-planetary blunderbuss you always wanted. This is second to the class design in complexity; any class design that moves faster than 1 KM/S has at least one component designed here.

This screen allows you to specify the component type and parameters of (for example) an engine you want to design. When you are satisfied with the engine's parameters, you must create the project before your research labs can formalize the design allowing your factories to produce them.

While the game automatically generates names based on the parameters you select, it is advisable to give memorable names to components with necessarily small variations. You will likely make between 2 and 20 variations of each engine technology for example, and the naming variation can be small to non-existant.
