Reduce the chance of malfunctions in a ship and carry maintenance supplies to repair those malfunctions that still happen. During ship design, you can remove the one default engineering section that is added for each new class, but having no ES at all increases malfunction rates by x10. This might actually be acceptable for fighters and ships that do not stay in space for longer periods.
