Description
Mesons are a type of beam weapon. They only deal one damage over their entire range, but compensate by bypassing enemy shields and armor. They have a maximum range of
Base Range * Range Modifier * 10000km
Their rate of fire is
Base Range / Capacitor Recharge Rate * 1s
While the theoretical maximum range far exceeds 1.5m km, no Beam Fire Control is able to handle ranges beyond this limit. Higher ranges offer no advantage for meson cannons. Mesons can be mounted in turrets.
Usage
Small turreted meson cannons provide good beam point defense, especially against armored missiles. As mesons bypass atmosphere, they are the only type of beam weapon that can be used for point defense on PDCs, or to attack PDCs. While large meson cannons have long range, they have very low damage output, and usually multiple small cannons have better performance. The mesons ability to bypass passive defenses only counts if they manage to destroy the target on their own. If other weapons need to breach the armor, equivalent sized Lasers have superior performance.
